In the late 1990s, When Boeing's product development engineers were looking at what might come next after the 777, they began to seriously consider the benefits of a composite wing -- and the concept that became the Dreamliner was born.

The result is a mid-size jet with the wingspan of the larger 777.

The leader of that 20XX product development team, John Roundhill, was among the 15,000 at Sunday's 787 rollout in Everett. Read what he had to say about the 787 in my Aerospace Notebook.
