6-engine Antonov An-225 coming to Boeing Field today, Friday - Rmail

If you want to see the world's largest plane -- no, not the A380 -- get out to Boeing Field by about 5 p.m. today, Friday.

The six-engine Antonov An-225 is supposed to land there between 5 and 5:30. Its cargo is four GE 777 engines that are being delivered to Boeing's propulsion unit at Boeing Field. Usually, Boeing's jet engines are delivered by smaller cargo planes, including the Antonov An-124.

You can track the progress of the An-225 flight to Boeing Field here.

The plane will leave early Saturday morning. It will be parked on the west side of Boeing Field, just north of the tower.

No one that I talked to can recall the An-225 ever landing at either Boeing Field or Sea-Tac Airport, although the plane may have made an appearance at the annual air show at Paine Field in Everett several years ago.

The An-225 was designed to carry Russia's space shuttle, much like the 747 is used to transport the U.S. shuttles.

The An-225 first flew in 1988. But it was soon grounded after the former Soviet Union canceled its Buran shuttle program. The shuttle flew only once on an unmanned flight. It's now a ride in a Moscow theme park.

Only one An-225 Mriya was built. The plane was subsequently taken out of storage, modernized and then flown to the 2001 Paris Air Show.

I was fortunate to tour the plane during the show that year. It's impressive.

The Russians hoped they could use the show to drum up business for their plane, which can carry 275 tons of cargo 2,790 miles. They did. It's been hauling various cargo since the air show.

The An-225 Mriya has a wingspan of 291 feet. That's 80 feet longer than the wingspan of Boeing's 747-400 and about 20 feet longer than the wingspan of the Airbus A380.

ANA says missing 737 wing washer could be Boeing production issue - Rmail

Inspectors in Japan have found a washer missing from a wing slat in a newly delivered Boeing 737-700, and officials there say it may have been left off during production of the jet in Renton.

Operators of the next-generation 737 series of jets have been inspecting planes since Aug. 20, when a China Airlines 737-800 explored in a fireball after landing in Okinawa. It was determined that a bolt in the right wing slat had come loose and punctured the fuel tank.

The missing washer on the ANA 737 raises further questions whether the root cause is a maintenance or production issue, or both. This is the report from The Associated Press about the ANA 737 and the missing washer.

Sir Richard now says 2 engines better than 4 - Rmail

Virgin Atlantic CEO Richard Branson said on Friday he would aim to avoid buying four-engine jets in the future because of fuel costs and the environmental impact.

In the past, Branson had maintained that four-engine jets such as the Airbus A340 were better and safer for long-haul flight over water. He shunned Boeing's two-engine 777. But earlier this year, Branson ordered Boeing's 787.

This is the story I did at the time about Branson's change of heart when he ordered the 787.

Branson's latest thoughts about jets and the environment came in comments to reporters in London. He also talked about the potential of biofuel to reduce jetliner carbon emissions. You can read more about the ongoing effort to develop a suitable jetliner biofuel by Boeing, Virgin Atlantic and GE in my Aerospace Notebook.

Green flying machines - Rmail

The Sept. 3 issue of Time Magazine has an interesting report about the new breed of turboprops such as Bombardier's Q400. They are quieter and faster than previous turboprops.

Seattle-based Horizon has the largest number of Q400s -- 33. And Horizon believes they are good enough to help the carrier challenge Southwest and its fleet of 737s.

Bombardier has a noise and vibration canceling system in the Q400. A computer initiates vibrations that counter those made by the six-bladed props. This can make the Q400 fuselage about 4 db quieter than many jets.

You can read the Time report here.

The new breed of turboprops is part of an industry-wide focus on making airplanes quieter and more environmentally friendly.

In my Aerospace Notebook Wednesday, I wrote about the ongoing effort by Boeing, Virgin Atlantic and General Electric to test a biofuel next year in a 747-400. Boeing's top guy on green issues believes passenger jets will be filling up with a biofuel blend in five to 10 years.

3,000th Boeing widebody jet is a 777-200ER for Korean Air - Rmail

Picture
Boeing's 3,000th widebody jet built at its Everett plant -- a Korean Air 777-200ER -- makes a low pass Friday over the Snoqualmie Ridge Golf course. Photo by Gilbert Arias.

Korean Air will take delivery Monday of its 18th Boeing 777, which also happens to be the 3,000th widebody jet that Boeing has built at its Everett plant. The plant opened in the late 1960s for production of the 747, and later added the 767, 777 and now the 787.

Boeing plans a factory celebration Monday to mark the occasion.

The 3,000th plane is a 777-200ER. Painted in the colors of Korean Air, the 777-200ER made a test flight Friday over the Snoqualmie Ridge golf course outside Seattle, where Boeing is sponsoring the Boeing Classic tournament for PGA seniors.

The big jet made a low-level pass over the course about 11:30 a.m. to kick off the three-day tournament.

Korean Air has been buying Boeing jets since 1971. The airline was the first to fly 747 cargo planes across the Pacific. Its fleet includes 18 777s, 45 Boeing 747-400s, and 32 Boeing 737s. The airline has on order 10 777s, five 737s, 10 787 Dreamliners, five 747-8 freighters and five 777 freighters.

Another runway near miss at LAX - Rmail

The National Transportation Safety Board said this week it is investigating a runway incursion at LAX in which two airliners may have missed each other by less than 40 feet.

The West Jet 737 and Northwest A320 carried 296 passengers and crew.

This is the NTSB summary of its preliminary report.

On August 16 at approximately 1:00 p.m. Pacific daylight time, West Jet (WJA) 900, a Boeing 737, and Northwest Airlines (NWA) flight 180, an Airbus A320, almost collided at the Los Angeles International Airport.

The West Jet flight landed on runway 24R, exited the runway, and held between the parallel runways as directed by the tower. However, without authorization, the West Jet crew changed radio frequencies and contacted ground control.

When contacted by the West Jet crew, the ground controller assumed that they had been cleared to cross runway 24L, and provided instructions for the West Jet flight to taxi to its gate. However, the tower controller expected the West Jet flight to hold and cleared the Northwest flight to takeoff from runway 24L.

The ground controller then realized that West Jet had not been instructed to cross runway 24L and told the West Jet flight to stop. According to the FAA, the West Jet airplane crossed the hold short line for runway 24L and the two aircraft came within 37 feet as the Northwest flight crossed directly in front of the West Jet flight during its takeoff roll.

The Board notes that the Airport Movement Area Safety System (AMASS) was operational but it is unknown whether or not it activated.

A preliminary report of the incident is available on the NTSB's Web site.
